The Story
This card set was produced on the occasion of Alex Israel: Noir at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. It includes eleven blank flat cards that reproduce the exhibited paintings in a panoramic format reminiscent of CinemaScope movie screens. Rendered in highly saturated colors, these paintings of unpopulated Los Angeles streetscapes at night depict personal landmarks for the artist—from Chateau Marmont and the Troubadour to Vons and the Bigg Chill. Produced through an extended collaboration with a pair of animators and an artist from the Scenic Art department at Warner Bros., the paintings interpret iconic LA locations through Israel’s take on noir aesthetics.
