The Story

Housed in a new cloth clamshell box, this catalogue documents the survey of Marcel Duchamp’s work staged at the Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon Museum) in California in 1963. The first major retrospective of Duchamp’s work, and the largest to date when it opened, the exhibition was one of curator Walter Hopps’s most significant projects at the museum. Duchamp was closely involved in the exhibition as well, and even designed the publication, which functions as an early catalogue raisonné of sorts, incorporating a chronology and indexes of the various phases of his massively influential practice, alongside an introduction by Hopps. It was printed by Cunningham Press, which would later print many of Ed Ruscha’s artist’s books.
