The Story

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Cy Twombly: Coronation of Sesostris at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York.

Coronation of Sesostris (2000) is a painting cycle in ten parts in which Twombly interprets Herodotus’s recounting of the conquests of the Egyptian pharaoh Sesostris as a fantastical meta-narrative, depicted in the arc of a single blazing day in Egypt from sunrise to journey’s end. Begun in Gaeta, Italy, and completed in Lexington, Virginia, it combines the artist’s graphic inventiveness and poetic sense of history, rhythm, and elision.

In addition to full-page reproductions of each part, the volume includes an essay and poem by David Shapiro and a poem by Patricia Waters.
