This is the first-ever monograph on Helen Marden, covering over forty years of her work. It documents the development from her abstracted, dark, and muted landscapes of the early 1980s, through the vibrantly hued, more lyrical work of the 1990s and early 2000s, to the most recent Grief paintings, made in response to the passing of her husband, Brice Marden. Over the last decade, Marden has produced brightly colored paintings with resin, pigment, and found objects—including shells collected from around the world—that give her works a unique texture and provide an index of her travels.
In addition to full-page plates of sixty works and numerous details, the volume features the essay “A Capacious Regard for the World” by Anna Godbersen, which examines Marden’s practice in concert with changes in her personal life, her voyages around the globe, and her close relationships with key figures in the art world. It also includes a conversation between Marden and Kiki Smith reflecting on their long-standing friendship, Marden’s creative process, and the importance of color in her work; photographs of the artist and her husband in their studios and documenting their travels; and a foreword by Larry Gagosian.
