Howard Hodgkin: From Memory

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Howard Hodgkin: From Memory at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. The vivid abstractions on view were executed in oil and incorporate their wood panel supports as integral compositional elements. Emphasizing interchanges of light and dark, Hodgkin used dynamic gestures and vibrant colors to convey the intensity of personal experience and recollection.

The catalogue is fully illustrated with plates of the twenty-one exhibited paintings—as well as three additional works—alongside photographs of them in the artist’s studio. An essay by James Lawrence entitled “Present Elsewhere” considers how Hodgkin composed his paintings and imbued them with emotional resonance.
