The Story

This book was published on the occasion of Jonas Wood, an exhibition of new tennis court paintings at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. Produced in 2025 and 2026, the works represent, in a distinct abstracted style, matches held at a prominent Association of Tennis Professionals, Women’s Tennis Association, or Olympic tournament, alongside one painting inspired by a video game the artist plays with his children. Continuing a series that Wood began in 2011, the paintings further his approach to the theme of sports while engaging with abstraction and Pop art.

The fully illustrated volume includes reproductions of the exhibition’s over twenty paintings, as well as studio photographs tracing their development. Represented without players or other figures, the tennis courts have standardized dimensions and varied color schemes, allowing the series to function as a form of serial abstraction, with each work balancing unique and repeated elements. In some works, Wood paints spaces flanking the courts as solid black blocks, conveying the experience of watching televised tennis matches in a darkened room. He develops other paintings with collaged compositions, combining the tennis courts with imagery of domestic and studio views, other series of his paintings, and interpretations of prints by Roy Lichtenstein.
