The Story

“The spirit of Gemini is best captured by the word ‘collaboration,’” writes Sidney B. Felsen. “It’s about artists and printers working hand-in-hand to create works of art. The same spirit prevails when I take photos.” In this book, Felsen, cofounder of Los Angeles artists’ workshop and fine-art publisher Gemini G.E.L., documents Richard Serra in the act of making some of the more than 320 print editions that he produced on the premises since 1972. “Taking photographs,” writes Serra, “is Sidney’s way of watching over us not watching us.” Alongside short texts by both Serra and Felsen, Richard Serra at Gemini presents ninety-one striking black-and-white images from nearly three thousand shots taken by Felsen, which detail the artist’s innovative techniques and celebrate their more than fifty years of friendship.
