The Story
This tote bag featuring a detail of Forest Scene with Temple (1966) was produced in conjunction with Roy Lichtenstein: Painting with Scattered Brushstrokes at Gagosian, 541 West 24th Street, New York. Presenting paintings, a sculpture, watercolors, and other works on paper exclusively from the Collection of the Lichtenstein Family, the exhibition was titled after a 1984 canvas by the artist and highlighted his use of the brushstroke as a formal and symbolic device. In the mythic tableau that constitutes Forest Scene with Temple, Lichtenstein juxtaposes Pop-inflected illustrations of the painterly mark with “real” gestural examples alongside Benday dots and stripes, furthering his playful engagement with issues of style, originality, and representation.
